How it all Began....

The Northern Root Gardens began in the summer of 2000 as a market garden and has since grown to become a medium for community connection and exchange. In the spring of 2001, the garden incorporated to become a not-for-profit society. Fifteen local citizens, families and organizations secured tenure to garden plots adjacent to the society's larger garden at the Old Experimental Farm between Smithers and Telkwa.

In 2004, the Old Experimental Farm was sold. The Northern Root Garden was relocated to its present location within town boundaries. The town of Smithers has generously offered the use of a large piece of land at the corner of Railway and Pacific Avenues. Currently there are 23 plots sized 15x30 feet. We also have a 50 foot greenhouse divided into plots of 8x7 feet.
